It depends on who you ask. Some argue that the Romans invented the version of the game involving throwing a cat’s head around. Others say the Chinese are kicking the ball back and forth to each other for thousands of years ago as a joke, and exercises, and travelers then had the game in England. Some say Canadians invented football in Quebec around 1600, and has been organized into leagues before America even heard the game.
The ancient Greeks played a game called Harpaston involving the movement of the ball on the goal line by running, kicking, tackling and throwing, without limiting the number of players. Nevertheless, historians have debated the validity of this claim, pointing to the lack of evidence, the rules and the possibility that the stories were simply invented based on the Greek works of art with an indication of people carrying balloons.
